Human resource management in action

Article Abstract:

Rosabeth Moss Kanter, author of 'Men and Women of the Corporation', is interviewed on the growing tendency to reconsider determinants of career success among both men and women. Kanter indicates that significant progress has been made in the last ten years in alleviating productivity-draining role stereotypes for women. Participative management and employee involvement programs are moving from fringe to central positions in corporate philosophies. Kanter reports that women are still kept out of the highest management positions. Kanter also asserts that as long as women continue to hold disproportionate family responsibilities, they may find it harder than men to take full advantage of participative and entrepreneurial management practices.

The Michigan global agenda: research and teaching in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

Michigan Business School must continue to educate students in management and leadership as globalization increases. The school's Jun 3, 1990, symposium on globalization featured several speakers who stated their definitions of a global organization. University of Michigan Professor Noel M. Tichy defined a global organization as one that views the world as one market while dealing with cultural diversity. Faculty, students, and executives must view education from a global perspective in the 1990s and the 21st century. The key elements of a globalized business school include language programs, comparative courses, and the use of visiting faculty members from other countries.

Prologue

Article Abstract:

The contents of a special women-in-management issue of Human Resources Management are reviewed in brief. Inadequate use of women's skills and talents is one way in which companies lose their competitive advantage in today's increasingly diverse workforce. It is suggested that myths about women in the workplace must be shattered, and that women's professional advances must be consolidated and extended.
