An empirical study of human resource management policies and practices in foreign-invested enterprises in China: the case of Shenzen Special Economic Zone

Article Abstract:

Human resources management (HRM) in Chinese enterprises based in the Special Economic Zone of Shenzen are analysed, using a postal survey. The practices in foreign-invested enterprises are investigated to discover whether they have moved away from centrally planned pay and lifetime employment. It is concluded that a hybrid system has developed, with some elements of Western systems blended with traditional Chinese ones. However, traditional aspects of HRM , such as welfare benefit and gender equality, continue to exist.
