An exploratory study of organizational flexibility in Malaysia: a research note

Article Abstract:

A study of 35 Malaysian organisations was conducted to examine the effects of rules on management discretion and employee conduct. Malaysian companies tend to combine elements of Confucian, Islamic and Western values. Islamic values focus on equality, consensus, honesty and doing a job properly and when these are evident, workers usually do not require many formal rules and regulations in order to do their job well. Workers' performance was enhanced by the lack of rule-based restrictions but imposing rules on managers was found to improve the performance of organisations.
