Appointments of CEOs in US companies: a comparison of 1978-9 and 1989-91

Article Abstract:

Research into the appointment of chief executive officers (CEOs) found they were recruited externally if there were several top jobs available but large businesses often promoted from within the company. Some 68% of all appointments were made internally. The role of a CEO is recognized as vital for both business enterprises and in the academic world. The most notable change between 1978-79 and 1989-91 was that in 1989-91 top managers were more likely to be recruited from outside the company particularly if it was not performing well. Some 418 CEO appointments were analysed.

Arthur F. Merewether: 1902-1997

Article Abstract:

American weatherman Arthur F. Merewether died on Feb 2, 1997 at his Bayside, Long Island, NY home at age 95. As his name suggests, Wetherman spent most of his life pursuing a career in weather. His stints as an Air Force pilot and as chief of meteorology for American Airlines helped him realize the significance of weather in the overall environment and culture. Although his career in weather and the military was dotted with numerous awards and recognitions, he is best remembered for his selflessness and willingness to take action and responsibility.
