Bad organisations cause mental ill health, say researchers

Article Abstract:

Some work practices increase the risk of mental illness, according to a longitudinal study of more than 10,000 civil servants in the UK. The research revealed that aspects of the work environment, particularly imbalance between the amount of effort expended and the rewards received, increased the risk of psychiatric ill health in the middle-aged population under review. The researchers, from University College London, believe that the study needs replication but that it provides enough evidence for organisations to consider amending their working practices.

Committed to mental health

Article Abstract:

Mental health suffered by employees in the UK may cost 3.7 billion pounds sterling annually. Some stress may be related to factors outside work such as bereavement or divorce, but workplace stress is causing absenteeism. There are a variety of ways this can be tackled, including allowing workers some control and varied schedules, assessing workloads, defining areas of responsibility and social opportunities.
