Feast of safety

Article Abstract:

There are patron saints giving protection against dangers such as plagues, broken bones and disasters, but there is no saint clearly associated with safety. There is a need for such a saint, and Benedict of Nursia is a possible candidate. He was aware of lifting gear hazards after Satan broke a rope carrying a bucket containing food for him, and dealt with hazardous substances when poison was served to him. He mended a bill-hook for a contractor. He was also concerned with order in the workplace. Though he lived from 480 to 550, his concerns reflect those of modern safety specialists.

Government is weak on corporate crime says law campaigner

Article Abstract:

The UK's criminal justice system is not structured in a way that makes it easy for large companies to be found guilty of manslaughter. The government believes that this problem can be addressed by introducing a new offence of corporate killing, but this is unlikely to be the case. This is because the criminal justice system alone is not responsible for the fact that many companies escape prosecution when a workplace death occurs. Some of the blame must lie with the Health and Safety Executive, which is responsible for investigating most workplace deaths.
