The failure of recent state vocational training policies in Korea from a comparative perspective

Article Abstract:

Recent research into vocational training policies in South Korea has focused on ChangWon Industrial Masters' College and co-operative training, looking at why these projects were not successful in promoting industrial skills. The main problems were identified as being the lack of interest in skill formation by manfacturing companies and the monopoly held by the government in industrial relations. The current state-dominated bureaucratic vocational training system is not suitable for meeting the evolving needs for industrial skills in the country's rapidly expanding economy.

Gender discrimination in training: a note

Article Abstract:

Analysis of data from the 1993 Australian Survey of Training and Education reveals that Australian women workers receive favourable treatment concerning employee training. The findings show an overall improvement in the position of training for women since a similar analysis of data conducted in 1989. Labour market characteristics indicate that men should receive more training, but results suggest that either employers are exercising positive discrimination in favour of training for women, or women are showing a greater preference for training than men.

Apprenticeship training and day release in UK engineering: some cross-sectional evidence

Article Abstract:

Recent research into apprenticeship training and day release among UK engineering firms has focused on the factors which have the potential to determine approaches to these practices. These include skill levels, company turnover and company size. It was found that union presence, firm size and skill levels play a key role in a company's approaches to apprenticeship training and day release, while product market competition, technology and production method do not.
