Benchmarking facilitates change and continuous improvement at BP Chemicals

Article Abstract:

BP Chemicals' facility in Hull, UK, has refocused its manufacturing operations, adopted a continuous improvement program, and revamped its personnel management framework and organizational performance benchmarks. This single-status approach is designed to reshape process technicians' jobs and allow employees to utilize a wider range of skills. Although union representation continues, collective bargaining has been changed to a pay-for-performance system coupled with additional financial incentives and training. Line managers have taken on human resource functions, while HR has moved into an advisory role.
