Wages and the labour market

Article Abstract:

Wages have multiple functions within an economy which stimulate debate about the desirability of policy intervention in wage determination processes. However wage structures cannot be explained through links to underlying economic or social rationales. Wage theories have concentrated on coherence and functionality rather than conflict and contradictions, and structures have been checked by institutional and social processes. The role of wages in resources redistribution and labour market regulation needs further consideration.

Future employment and the internal labour market

Article Abstract:

The response from employees and labour unions to the fundamental changes in work arrangements which are now creating greater labour market uncertainty will be a key issue for society. If companies begin to focus on more market-based labour strategies, then there will be serious implications for policy. Steps will have to be taken to ensure that the impact on people and on society as a whole is kept to a minimum.

Rethinking employment

Article Abstract:

External market pressures are beginning to have a significant impact on internal labour markets, which have traditionally operated as a formal framework for managing employees in large companies. There are now signs that many aspects of internal labour markets are beginning to break down, being replaced by more market-mediated arrangements. This may in turn create more volatility in workplace issues.
