Community unionism in Baltimore and Stamford: beyond the politics of particularism

Article Abstract:

The author asserts that unions need to find alternative means of reaching workers than the traditional work-site method due to the change in the structure of employment in the US, with more of the work-force being employed in part-time, low-wage jobs. Examples of community-based labor organizing in Baltimore, Maryland and Stamford, Connecticut are used to evaluate how unions can develop new strategies such as multiunion alliances between community organizations, religious institutions and ethnic groups to promote labor relations on behalf of workers.

African-American workers and the social benefits of tight labor markets

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the economic and employment gains of educated African-American workers during the tight labor market of the later Clinton years, when unemployment fell below 5%. The author asserts that negative stereotypes of former welfare recipients were broken down over this time, which lead to their employment and growth in wages; the shift from intermittent to full-time work among African-American males is also highlighted.
