Does corporate community work really shape perceptions?

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted by The Center for Corporate Community Relations of Chestnut Hill, MA indicates companies that are active in their communities tend to have a positive public image. Politicians and executives from local civic groups in 72 cities were asked to identify nine local corporations that provided the most help to the community. The criteria for excellence were: management support of community activities; employee involvement; innovation, relevance, and effectiveness of company programs; and reputation of the company in the community. National companies identified by the survey as having good community relations included: Atlantic Richfield, Federated Department Stores, GTE, Honeywell, and IBM. Regional companies with equally good reputations in local communities included: BankAmerica, Bellsouth, Pacific Gas and Electric, Pacific Telesis Group, and USWEST.
