What human resource practitioners need to know for the twenty-first century

Article Abstract:

It is beneficial for human resource (HR) practitioners to expand their knowledge beyond such HR basics as employee relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, and selection and placement. Other items that should be on their list of 'need to knows' are performance improvement, restructuring, organizational change, globalization, workgroups and teams, action learning, relationships at multiple levels, balance between work and personal life, and the shifts of power at the micro and macro levels. Knowledge in these areas can help HR practitioners to expand their repertoire and avoid overspecialization, to anticipate and prepare for new developments, and to improve their ability to understand and diagnose organizational issues.

The future HR professional: competency buttressed by advocacy and ethics

Article Abstract:

The HR profession of the future will require competency as well as advocacy and professional ethics. It will not be enough for HR people to develop and apply the HR management body of knowledge. They must also be able to maintain their credibility as legitimate business partners. HR managers must pay equal attention to their conflicting roles as members of management and as advocates of employees. They must strive to address and promote the interests of all parties, instead of appearing to be too motivated by self-interest. Balancing the interests of all parties may sometimes require HR professionals to place themselves at risk. This is likely to happen when circumstances are unclear or when there is a double standard.
