Don't mix it

Article Abstract:

A UK police department has launched an initiative aimed at persuading employers to take a more responsible approach to employee substance abuse. Inappropriate alcohol use accounts for 3-5% of all work absences, according to the UK Health and Safety Executive. It also has additional costs to the employer due to mistakes made when judgement is impaired. Substance-abuse presents an additional burden, yet a survey by the police department survey revealed that few firms operate a drug or alcohol policy. The initiative which is endorsed by employers' and labour organisations, adopts a welfare approach.
