Engage electronic liaisons

Article Abstract:

Technology's role in organizational communication is continuing to expand. Many human resources managers are taking advantage of computer-based communication's ability to customize information. Personalization of information eliminates the need for employees to go through a huge body of information when only a small portion of such information is relevant to them. Because they are presented with information that are specific to them, employees no longer need to go through the time-consuming process fo making 'if/then' decisions. Customization is ideal for bodies of information that contain redundancies, such as benefits statements. However, although HR automation offers numerous benefits, the need for personal interaction should not be neglected since people still work best as part of a group.

Use technology to manage your expats

Article Abstract:

The use of technology by human resources executives can make management of expatriate employees significantly easier. Cross-cultural training for employees about to work in foreign lands can be administered by employing interactive disks and videoconferencing. Financial planning can also be expedited and made easier by relying on modeling tools. In addition to its application to training and financial purposes, technology can also facilitate communication for expatriate employees. Electronic mail, online newsletters and shared databases are some of the tools that can effectively link expatriates to their native country. Human resources professionals should consider whether outsourcing or in-house technology is needed for expatriates.

Assisting the disabled

Article Abstract:

Employers should exert extra effort to expand the opportunities of disabled employees. Technological advancements are providing materials and ways to help disabled employees overcome obstacles not only in their careers but in their lives as well. Among the technologies that are aiding the disabled are speech amplification devices in customized telephones, electronic Braille devices, hands-free infrared pointing devices, speech synthesizers and vibrating beepers. Human resources professionals and management are encouraged to determine staff needs and elicit participation from personnel with special needs so that accommodations, which are often simple and inexpensive, can be made to boost work performance and productivity.
