Environment and health & safety go hand in hand, says European Foundation

Article Abstract:

There are a number of areas in which good environmental performance and employee health and safety operate in tandem, according to two reports from the European Foundation. These areas include preventing risks at source instead of taking corrective action later and managing contractors' performance. The reports recommend transferring current good practice in health and safety to environmental initiatives. They also highlight several management concepts which take a holistic view of the environment, health and safety and quality control.

Egan: A health and safety perspective

Article Abstract:

Sir John Egan's Rethinking Construction report was produced by the Construction Task Force for Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescot, and its publication followed Latham's report Constructing the Team. Both reports concentrate on commercial improvement, but demonstrate that good health and safety management is the key to their stated goals. Egan's main targets are client focus, integrated processes and teams, commitment to people and quality driven agenda, and a 10% reduction in reportable accidents.

Rise in fatal accidents angers law campaigners

Article Abstract:

There were an estimated 302 worker fatalities in the UK in 1996 to 1997, from 258 in the previous year, according to the Annual Report from the Health and Safety Commission. The Health Safety Executive (HSE) has expressed concern that the conviction rate for contravening occupational health and safety regulations is declining, but does not feel that the solution is to increase the number of prosecutions. The HSE is recruiting additional inspectors, but is still facing a cut in funding.
