Establishing retirement income objectives: the 1991 RETIRE project report

Article Abstract:

An update on a 1988 study of retirement income emphasizes age- andwork-related expenditures and reveals that gift spending has increased at the higher pre-retirement salary levels. New calculations thus exclude the change in post-retirement gifting. As in the 1988 study, patterns of gross and net replacement ratios are observed, with the former having increased due to a lowering of savings rates. This correlates with the result that personal savings decreased in the 1980s. In contrast, net replacement ratios increased at lower income levels and decreased at the higher levels.

Pensions: an important component of retirement income

Article Abstract:

Employer-sponsored pensions function in stages within the pension coverage continuum. The continuum is composed of pension coverage, participation, vesting and benefit receipt. The stages are affected by structural factors such as sector, industry, firm size and state of residence as well as by individual factors such as age, annual earnings, gender and work status. According to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, employer-sponsored pensions are seen to be a major factor in retirement income in the future.

Japanese pension plans in transition

Article Abstract:

The aging of the Japanese populace requires the adoption of tax reforms due to an expected rise in the number of social security beneficiaries and a corresponding increase in pension costs. The government and the private sector has reacted to the problem by increasing the mandatory retirement age, adopting merit-based compensation and new personnel management policies. Moreover, severance pay plans are being replaced with pension funds.
