Fighting the costs of spouse abuse

Article Abstract:

Spouse abuse, typically committed by males against females, costs businesses $3.5 billion annually in absenteeism. It is difficult to spot abusers in the workplace, because their abusive behavior is rarely shown on the job. In identifying and helping to halt abuse, the employer safeguards the lives of victims and cuts productivity losses. Legally, spouse abuse is increasingly treated as assault. Its enormous cost to employers mandates corporate involvement. There are distress signals associated with the abuser's cycle of violence. The aware employer can refer employees to domestic violence programs, while stipulating that high absenteeism and poor performance will result in termination of employment.
