HSS follows an ethical path

Article Abstract:

HSS Hire Shops, the United Kingdom's largest tool and equipment hire chain with a workforce of over 2,200 people and priding itself on its ethical corporate culture, introduced a code of employee conduct in 1995 governing its relationship with staff, customer, suppliers, regulatory bodies and shareholders. The code includes clauses covering pricing policy, criminal activity, conflict of interest, whistleblowing and relations with regulatory authorities.

The state of telework

Article Abstract:

Rumors of a telecommuting revolution appear exaggerated as of the late 1990s, yet some major employers are devoting substantial resources to enable telecommuting by white-collar staff from home or business travel.These employers include Sainsbury's and the Hertfordshire County Council. Reasons other employers may be slow to follow are discussed, as are technological developments, telecommuting statistics, and union responses to telecommuting.

Staff councils - provisioning two-way communication at Sainsbury's

Article Abstract:

An extensive network of staff councils has made for better employee-management communication at the supermarket chain Sainsbury's. Sainsbury's set up a model for staff councils to minimize bureaucracy. It involved a two-tier structure with a network of local councils and a group council with no intermediate bodies. J Sainbury is one of Britain's largest retailers, including supermarkets, Savacentre and Homebase.
