Hill street clues: the US police record on promoting women

Article Abstract:

The career development practices at some of the best US police departments and their affect on the careers of women can provide several useful lessons for police departments and other public- and private-sector employers in Great Britain. Women still hold a small percentage of the management positions in US police departments due to their relatively recent entry into the profession, promotion systems based on seniority, and biased evaluations by supervisors. Many US police departments have made progress in addressing sex discrimination in career development by basing factors affecting promotion and review systems only on job-related criteria, by using assessment centers and external assessment, and by implementing mixed-gender interview boards.

Encouraging learners to find their own way

Article Abstract:

Sundridge Park Management Centre (Kent, UK) has used the concept of the 'learning community' concept to meet its own employee training needs. The learning center program allows the participants to influence their own learning by including courses with contents that parallel learner needs. Courses usually last five days. Needs and expectations are identified on the first day. Over the remaining four days, the group is divided into autonomous groups of three or four. Tutors circulate from group to group, providing advice as it is needed.
