How Alfa-Laval got employees moving

Article Abstract:

Alfa-Laval Thermal Co achieved a very high 73% retention rate among 55 employees selected to move with the company when it relocated to another state. The firm accomplished its high retention rate by using effective reasoning, persuasion, and generous relocation packages. The employee concerns considered by the company when selecting a site included quality of life, economic base, and affordable housing. The elements of the program announcing the relocation included the retention of a finance company at the new location to provide discounted mortgage rates, up to ten paid days off to house-hunt, and reimbursement of household moving expenses. Employees were mailed a package of gifts one month prior to the decision deadline: the $200 package of gifts included a 10-karat gold pen, a miniature wooden house, and a filled pencil case, all with attached messages related to the move.
