Report from Hong Kong - futurist inspires HR leaders

Article Abstract:

More than 1,000 HR professionals from nearly 50 countries attended the 1996 World Congress on Personnel Management held in Hong Kong from June 15 through 28. With the theme 'Global Challenges and Country Practices in People Management,' the conference provided an opportunity for attendees to hear and exchange ideas on the implications of the current international business environment and the future of global HR issues. One of the highlights of the event was the thought-provoking presentations made by keynote speaker Karl Albrecht. The management consultant and futurist talked about the complexities of HR management in the present chaotic global business environment. He introduced the concept of the 'Third Wave' of the human cultural evolution to describe the chaos in the international marketplace. This concept is discussed.

Big Mac's McGlobal HR secrets

Article Abstract:

McDonald's Corp. has a highly effective global human resources management system for managing about a million of its employees and supervisors in 18,380 restaurants in 91 countries. The key to the success of its HR management approach is flexibility and sensitivity to the cultural mores of countries where it operates. In fact, one of the company's principles is that its restaurants reflect the communities they serve. This means that American HR practices are not automatically imposed on foreign operations. Instead, only the best practices from around the world are implemented by blending them into local practices. Knowing what is right for a particular location is possible trough exploratory visits during which information about a country is collected. This way, HR management is adapted to the needs of the local workforce.
