Employee research: from nice to know to need to know

Article Abstract:

A recent survey of 429 human resources directors by the Gallup Organization for Personnel Journal reveal that 93 percent find employee attitude surveys to be valuable tools in human resource management. More then 69 percent of the directors expect to continue employee surveys in areas relating to communication, motivation, effectiveness of supervisors, and compensation. Senior management awareness of the importance of human resources is apparent in many companies because 39 percent of the respondents indicated that senior management sent the survey idea to the human resources director. The largest negative finding was the insufficient management support cited by 39 percent of the directors. This lack of support may be related to problems of insufficient resources and organizational constraints to change.

Shift work creates unusual problems

Article Abstract:

Irregular shift work can result in difficulties for employees. A review of current research reveals that the problems experienced by employees may be because they are not on typical society and psychological schedules. Research on shift workers by Concordia University reveals that workers on rotating shifts suffer physically and emotionally and some demonstrate lower job satisfaction and job commitment than workers on fixed shift schedules. A number of actions can be taken by employers to reduce the harmful effects of rotating shift work including: increasing the length of rotation periods; making shift changes in a forward direction; and informing workers about shift changes well in advance.
