Is white asbestos ban in the UK necessary? Yes says health and safety expert

Article Abstract:

Exposure to chrysotile should be limited to ensure the UK Control Limit of 0.5 fibres/ml is achieved. Further cuts to the Control Limit to 0.3 fibres/ml are planned, making the new limit some 0.3 fibres/ml below the European Limit. Exposure to asbestos causes 3000 deaths annually, in the UK. It has been suggested other substances should be used instead of chrysotile. Chrysotile production takes place in the country of origin, such as in China. There is some concern safety limits are not being observed therefore producers must guarantee adherence before importing asbestos into the UK.

Asbestos revisited

Article Abstract:

The removal of asbestos from buildings is already covered by safety regulations as it is a possible cause of cancer. It has to be done carefully to minimise exposure. Two new statutory instruments come into force in 1993 to further tighten the regulations. At present the owner of the building has the safety responsibility, but under the new laws the removal contractor shares in the liability.
