Article Abstract:

British employers are obliged by the Employer's Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1989 to insure their employees against liability for bodily injuries resulting from their work. Recently, several employees have successfully made claims against their employers relating to psychological injury and insurance company's claims personnel are having to assess cases involving mental health and psychological issues. The insurance industry's approach to mental health issues is further discussed.

Many a slip trip and fall: the role of human factors in an organisation's health and safety management system

Article Abstract:

Safety has focused on safe working procedures but greater improvements in safety performances may rely on a better understanding of employees and their attitudes and behaviour in the workplace. This is a requirement in a self regulatory system and the interactions between people, jobs and organisation factors are significant in achieving effective safety management systems.

Are you ready for 1993?

Article Abstract:

New regulations coming into force on Jan 1 1993 are taking over parts of the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act, and the Factories and Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Acts will be superseded. The new regulations include; the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations, the Manual Handling Regulations, the Display Screen Equipment Directive and others.
