Man of the moment: John Banham, director general, Confederation of British Industry

Article Abstract:

Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Director General John Banham, who will take over the position full-time in March 1987, has limited experience in industrial management. However, he brings to the CBI post an ability to handle the stress of being the focus of attention from his experience in consultancy and in working with the Audit Commission. Banham believes that much of the decline experienced by manufacturing firms in the UK is due to skill shortages. He would like to promote the importance of investing in training for British employees.

Man of the moment: James Shaw

Article Abstract:

UK Hampshire County Council manpower services officer James Shaw feels that any nationally negotiated pay scales should be nothing more than minimums, allowing room to account for long-term regional pay rate variations. Shaw believes that provincial council secretariats in Wales and England could provide negotiating support and other employer association-type services. Shaw joined Hampshire after over 12 years in Thamesdown, where he introduced an in-house computer system and an electronic office system.
