Beyond leadership: the human factor in leadership

Article Abstract:

The difference between satisfactory leadership and great leadership can be achieved through application of the 'human component of leadership'. The word LEADER can be seen as an acronym meaning: Love, Enthusiasm, And Dedication Earn Respect. In other words, supervisors should demonstrate love, or caring, for their employees; they should be enthusiastic about their work; and they should be dedicated, or committed, to their work. Supervisors can measure their dedication by monitoring their level of enthusiasm for the job over a period of time, and by asking themselves two questions every morning: 'Am I looking forward to today?' and 'Would I rather be doing something else than the work I'm in?' The answers should be 'yes' and 'no', respectively, on a consistent basis.

Gauging organizational climate

Article Abstract:

A questionnaire developed to survey the climate of the workplace is explained, and a sample questionnaire is included. The survey questions focus on four factors that affect the climate within a corporate environment: communication patterns, management policies, employee morale and motivation, and the job itself. When the questionnaire is administered, respondents grade their work environment in specific areas, rather than judging broad, general areas. It is suggested that respondents be given a week in which to complete their surveys, and that the survey be given twice to four times per year. Also, respondents should be advised to answer each question separately from the others.
