Lessons of the civil rights movement for building a worker rights movement

Article Abstract:

Workers and unions can learn lessons from the civil rights movement to build a worker rights movement to achieve fundamental changes and not merely financial increments. The example of civil rights movement shows that workers' rights can be won only if workers launch a mass movement, take risks by engaging in direct action, demonstrate an ability to disrupt the normal functioning of society and maintain the momentum until concessions are won.

Labor and corporate governance: initial lessons from shareholder activism

Article Abstract:

A crisis in the financial markets in the United States in 2004 has revealed serious, systematic flaws in corporate governance, which has cost union pension funds, billions of dollars. A comparative case study that illustrate how unions can continue to take the lead in corporate governance reform and build the necessary financial and political leverage to win shareholder campaigns is presented.

Labor-environmental coalitions

Article Abstract:

The dynamics of partnerships between labor and environmental groups is studied through a theoretical model. The forces promoting labor-environmental coalitions as well as the difficulties that keep both labor and community groups apart are explored with the use of examples.
