Lifeline for business: over ninety per cent of the British workforce is employed by small businesses

Article Abstract:

Although the International Labour Organisation (ILO) drew up Convention 161 committing United Nations (UN) member states to provide occupational health cover for every worker, the UK has still not ratified this, after 10 years. Most successful companies incorporate health and safety issues into their business agenda. There is a need to develop a model for occupational health services provision which will take into account the complex nature of the British workplace, which includes major steelworks, units on industrial estates, homeworkers and teleworkers.

Managing to avoid violence

Article Abstract:

A survey by Labour Research revealed that physical assaults occur in 54% of workplaces, while violent incidents take place in 70% of all workplaces. The research included 100 union officials, who represented a total of 90,000 workers. Of the total nmber of violent incidents, 45% had no safety officer or manager in charge of prevention of violence. Posts which are most at risk include those within social services, housing, and enforcement.

The work of an HSE inspector is described, detailing his check on improvements in health and safety practices regarding breathing appratus at a firm of drain cleaners. An HSE Inspector can immediately shut an operation down and has the right to investigate a premises to fiind the information he needs.
