Low pay and wage regulation in the European Community

Article Abstract:

Most European Community workers are protected by minimum wage rules in all member countries, with the exception of the UK and Ireland. Different methods of wage regulations exist within the EC, and further measures may be needed to combat pressures to reduce wages that will come with the single European market. Possible initiatives include a floor to wage distribution, reduction of the extent of low wages, improvement of labor productivity, education programs and community aid.

Behind the European works councils Directive: the European Commission's legislative strategy

Article Abstract:

The European Commission's draft Directive, published in Jan 1991, seeks to establish European works councils in multinationals operating in two or more EC nations. The proposal aims to reconcile existing national employee representation systems with the proposed legislative strategy. The UK government strongly opposes the Directive but the outcome of the Maastricht summit has increased the chances of the 11 other member countries adopting it.

Incomes policy for Europe? Or will pay bargaining destroy the Single European Market?

Article Abstract:

Centralized wage bargaining within the context of the Single European Market will increase inflationary pressures within wage structures of the European Community's new macroeconomic environment. Individual countries need to encourage more flexible and coordinated pay systems and decentralization of bargaining in order to avoid inflationary pressures.
