Are you competent?: new NVQs and SVQs in occupational health and safety practice will be launched at the RoSPA Congress on 20 June

Article Abstract:

National and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (VQs) for occupational health and safety practitioners have been developed over three years by consultants for the Occupational Health and Safety Lead Body(OHSLB), the EDMC, in conjunction with professional bidies, employers, trainers and health and safety practitioners. Competence means being able to perform the activities to levels expected in employment and the ability to use skills and knowledge in different situations. Candidates may be assessed in house or at assessment centres.

Practitioners must not miss out on training and development

Article Abstract:

With the introduction of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) there is an opportunity for the occupational health and safety sector to develop standards of competence. Competence is defined by the chief executive of the National Council for Vocational Qualifications John Hillier as being able to perform occupational activities up to employment standards. It does not require a formal course of training or qualifications and judgement is made over a period.

Virtually no risk; role of desktop virtual reality in health and safety training

Article Abstract:

Virtual reality can be used for interactive training, ideal for health and safety work. Factories and offices can be created on a desktop virtual reality system, which avoid some of the problems met in the 'immersion' systems used. It is seen as being additional to other forms of training, and as a method of alleviating the boredom of health and safety sessions.
