Performance appraisal found in most organisations

Article Abstract:

A May 1997 survey of 536 private and public sector companies shows that nine in 10 companies use appraisal systems. 85% of the companies use appraisals to assess individual development needs, 84% use it to set goals and 76% use it to provide feedback. Only 50% of the respondents linked appraisal to pay. While only 9% use it to further an organization's cultural change, 31% do use appraisals to assess training needs. In 95% of the organizations the line managers play a significant role in the appraisal.

Partnership organisations ambivalent towards trade unions

Article Abstract:

A study for the Involvement and Participation Assn (IPA) indicated that unions and business managers equivocally viewed partnerships between the two groups. A large proportion of IPA survey respondents did not view the partnerships as actual business relationships. Some managers preferred to communicate directly with employees without any union involvement.
