New Zealand HRD practitioner competencies: application of the ASTD competency model

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the competencies requested of prospective New Zealand human resource development (HRD) practitioners by employers against the American Society of Training and Development's (ASTD) 1987 competency model indicates that employers look particularly for technical HRD abilities, followed by interpersonal skills. It was established that the ASTD competency model fails to take account of personal competencies, which can be seen as a key competency element. There is a need to establish whether competencies in general, and personal competencies in particular, are connected to any thorough competency analysis of the job concerned.
