New TUC action against race discrimination

Article Abstract:

The British Trade Unions' Council has many suggestions for union officials and negotiators to take to benefit minority members. Development of a more inclusive union organization would include monitoring the ethnicity of members, campaigns for racial equality and specific recruitment initiatives. Ethnic minority union members can be encouraged to participate in union activities through formal representation and self-organization. Lobbying of employers for effective equal opportunities policies is another possibility.

Race, class, and the Katrina crisis

Article Abstract:

The recent human tragedy in New Orleans created by Hurricane Katrina has generated an interesting and important debate about the underlying causes of black suffering and oppression. The question in its most simple form, being debated is whether race and racism were most responsible for the Katrina crisis that disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands of African Americans, or whether class and poverty were relatively more significant in explaining this human catastrophe.
