On the road down under

Article Abstract:

UK truck drivers are having to cover longer distances and work for longer hours following the expansion of trade with the European Community, and they could learn from the Australian experience. Australians are experienced in long-distance trucking, and companies are learning to take better care of their drivers. This includes providing phones so they can keep in touch with wives, and encouraging healthy eating by using fridges in trucks. Drivers are also provided with rest stations along many routes to reduce accidents rates.

The end of the road for traffic

Article Abstract:

Holes in the ozone layer and an increase of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere are just two of the effects of car usage. Skin cancer cases are increasing as well as asthma cases. Earth's temperature will rise accordingly, leading to drought, erosion and flooding. UK cars contribute 20% of the country's carbon dioxide gases. It is suggested that restrictions on the car may be the only way to cut these gases.
