Outlook for pension legislation in 1993

Article Abstract:

President Clinton did not give his views on retirement policy during his campaign, so his intentions in this regard are not clear. The type of people he appoints to Cabinet and subcabinet positions will provide some indication. Democrats in Congress who are knowledgeable about the issues may also have substantial input. Revenue considerations could also impact retirement policy, especially in view of Clinton's campaign promise not to raise taxes for the middle class or for corporations. The Clinton Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp may be willing to live with some losses to preserve jobs.

Pension simplification efforts advance

Article Abstract:

Bills introduced by Representative Chandler (HR 2641), Senators Bentsen and Pryor (S 1364) and Representative Rostenkowski (HR 2730) have proposed changes to simplify pension law. The bills deal with such issues as the taxation of distributions, the revision of discrimination testing rules and the clarification of certain definitions. Rostenkowski's proposal is similar to the Bush Administration's 'Pension Opportunities for Workers' Expanded Retirement' plan. A comparison of the proposals is provided.

1997 tax law changes affecting retirement plans

Article Abstract:

Most of the provisions of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 will help retirement plans and their participants. Most are narrower than the pension simplication legislation of the year before contined in the Small Business Job Protection Act. Included are an expansion of the individual retirement account provisions, provisions primarily for qualified plans and those regarding ERISA paperwork, also those for governmental and tax exempt employer plans.
