Pay Equity: An Innovative Public Policy Approach to Eliminating Sex-Based Wage Discrimination

Article Abstract:

The issue of equal pay for work of comparable value has become a matter of public policy. Wage discrimination is not new; what is new, is the significant increase in the number of suits concerning it. The National Committee on Pay Equity is committed to achieving equal pay for women. The primary cause of the wage gap is the low wage rate paid women in sex segregated jobs. The most effective way to document wage discrimination is to perform job evaluation studies of the workplace. In addition to education and research, other strategies must be pursued aggressively to close the wage gap. These include collective bargaining in both the public and private sectors, and strict enforcement of all legislation pertaining to equal pay.

The Newest Balancing Act: A Comparable Worth Study

Article Abstract:

The planning and implementation of a comparable worth study is presented. A comparable worth study evaluates four areas of job measurement: skill level, effort, responsibility and working conditions. When planning a study, the first step is to decide which jobs should be included in the study. To make a study meaningful and well understood an evaluation tool should be choosen, an evaluation team picked and a plan for implementation prepared. The expectations of a comparable worth study are examined. Unions are always interested in the results of these studies and should be included in the actual job analysis.

Addendum - Pay Equity: An Innovative Public Policy Approach to Eliminating Sex-Based Wage Discrimination

Article Abstract:

The main innovative approach to the problem of wage discrimination by sex is pay equity. Pay equity is becoming public policy for many state and local governments. The goal of equal pay for equal work for women is backed by the National Committee on Pay Equity. When first approaching wage discrimination, documentation can be achieved through a job evaluation of the work place. Labor unions and state and local governments have all been working toward pay equity. The AFL-CIO passed a resolution on equal pay for work of comparable value.
