Performance management in a changing context: Monsanto pioneers a competency-based, developmental approach

Article Abstract:

Monsanto Co. developed the Performance Enhancement Process (PEP) as an alternative to traditional performance management systems that it found to be unsuited to the prevailing lean economic climate. PEP focuses not on employee performance, but on the context in which performance occurs. It promotes organizational clarity and establishes a solid relationship between the human resources function and the company's business objectives. Monsanto's adoption of PEP signals its shift from performance management to employee development. The chemical company seeks to simplify goal setting and to facilitate the evolution of the supervisor's role from evaluator to coach. It introduced a system of 360-degree feedback to assess PEP's performance and to ensure continuous development.
