Personnel practices in partnerships

Article Abstract:

Personnel professionals face several special problems in the area of partnerships. An increasing number of partnerships, such as partnerships of accountants, lawyers, and architects, are hiring personnel specialists. One of the problems faced by personnel specialists derives from the fact that most of the senior employees are also owners of the firm, and the personnel specialists may have to spend a great deal of time persuading the owners to do things. Many firms claim that they place a high priority on personnel management, but their actions are not consistent with their claims. Personnel professionals have a responsibility to provide career paths and professional development, while making a contribution to the success of the business.

Dennis Cottrell

Article Abstract:

Dennis Cottrell was appointed group director of personnel at British Gas PLC even as the company was undergoing major changes. After a turbulent privatization, British Gas has been carrying out plans for domestic and international expansion while implementing an ambitious equal opportunities program. Cottrell does not seem to be daunted by the challenges facing him, as the company's head of personnel, at this time of upheaval. He seems well prepared for the job, with sound theoretical background as a former business school professor and extensive practical experience gained from years of working in the company's training function.
