Labor on trial: assessing Sweeney's record

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the AFL-CIO under the leadship of president John Sweeney, including organized labors support for Democratic Party politicians in elections for president and Congress regardless of the questionable centrist stance of Bill Clinton and Al Gore and despite labor's objections to their support for the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1993, Welfare Reform in 1996, favorable trade status for China in 2000, as well as their backing of the World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund and World Bank. Issues include the need for unions to transform their organizational models into social movement; this would include the need for union democratization that would give members a sense of ownership, decentralization of union governance by giving members control over affairs, and a break from business unionism in which the main function of the union has been to deliver the goods for members; the promotion of union solidarity and its role as a class institution should be emphasized.

From the ashes of the old: labor needs a new political strategy

The labor movement has not benefited from its alliance with the Democratic Party and should instead become an independent social movement for working people. Topics discussed include labor's involvement in electoral politics, lack of success in promoting its legislative program, and the possibility of a new doctrine of democratic syndicalism.
