Privatizing government pensions: The United States and the Netherlands

The Thrift Savings Plan for those working for the federal government in the US and the Account Balance Pension for those working for the Netherlands are two of the biggest pension funds in the world. The plans supply evidence regarding the successful government management of funded pensions, among other things.

Are Cash Balance Plans Defined Benefit or Defined Contribution Plans?

Article Abstract:

Cash balance plans are mutated pension plans that are treated by U.S. pension law as defined benefit plans, despite their defined contribution plan features. After perusing the feature s of cash balance plans from employer and worker vantage points, the author shows how treating cash balance plans solely as defined benefit plans leads to problems.

Errors workers make in managing 401(k) investments

Article Abstract:

The reasons why individuals make errors in managing their pensions in 401(k) plans, the types of errors they make and how errors differ across types of participants and possible policy suggested by understanding participant errors are analyzed. With different contribution plans prevailing, investors should make better investment decisions during the accumulation phase before their retirement.
