Profile: Derek Evans: chief conciliation officer, Acas

Article Abstract:

The UK Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service's (Acas) new chief conciliation officer Derek Evans foresees that management strategies in the 1990s will place great emphasis on the maximization of human resources. This will call for the recognition of the individual capabilities of employees, although trade unions will still play a key role as third party mediators. Evans's involvement in the UK industrial relations scene is best illustrated by his achievements in Acas in the areas of trade union recognition issues, advisory services, and of conciliation and arbitration procedures. Evans has been with Acas since its establishment in 1974 and since is credited with the conceptualization of the joint employer-union approach to problem-solving in 1978 and the formation of the Joint Industrial Relations Forum for Wales during his stint as director of Acas Wales in 1982.

An independent look at Acas' advisory services

Article Abstract:

The UK Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) provides free advisory assistance on industrial relations cases that cannot be resolved by any other agency. The Acas recently sponsored a study to examine the continued relevance of its services and how it influences current industrial relations and employment procedures. Two hundred fifty management representatives responded to a postal survey of organizations involved in advisory activities between 1989 and 1990. Findings showed that a substantial number of organizations availed of Acas services because of their impartiality and independence. More than half of the respondents said that management found Acas services to be extremely helpful in resolving issues. Seventy-seven per cent of survey participants considered industrial relations concerns identified by Acas to be satisfactorily resolved.
