Planning profit from advanced manufacturing technology

Article Abstract:

Advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) is a term which covers the many different computerized systems for design and manufacture. Benefits of AMT include consistent and higher quality, shorter lead times, reductions in working capital, and increased flexibility. Companies planning to invest in AMT must have a long-term business plan in place if they are to succeed, linking product, market, financial and manufacturing strategies. Detailed assessment and planning are also necessary when determining specific details of the AMT plan. Two case studies are presented: Victor Products and Dresser UK's British Jeffrey Diamond Division. Victor adopted a fairly rapid AMT program, while British Jeffrey Diamond used a more gradual, step-by-step approach.

Manpower modelling with computer spreadsheets

Article Abstract:

Spreadsheets running on personal computers can be used by personnel managers to model their organization's manpower requirements. Spreadsheet programs are more powerful, more reliable, and more versatile than spreadsheets on paper, and a spreadsheet model of a manpower budget can be created in a few minutes, using one of the more popular personal computer programs, such as Multiplan (running on an Apple Macintosh) or Lotus 1-2-3 (running on an IBM PC or compatible). The use of an electronic spreadsheet for manpower planning is described, as are the automatic functions of the programs, copying, calculating ability, range of mathematical functions, answering important questions, and their strategic significance.
