Rail safety after privatisation

Article Abstract:

The Health and Safety Commission's recommendations to ensure rail safety after privatisation of British Rail (BR) have been accepted by the government and the present BR management. Any private operator who wishes to operate part of the rail network will have to make a 'railway safety case.' This would include policy, systems and assessment of risks involved. Driver hours will be considered, as will carrying hazardous materials and accident investigations.

The corporate social responsibility has gone up in the business agenda for all stakeholders including the shareholders, as they have to include the environmental, social and community issues relevant to their business in their annual report. Margaret Beckett, the environment secretary, referred to wider market systems that would be beneficial to all investors and businesses alike.
