Ringing the changes at Mitel Telecom

Article Abstract:

Canadian-based Mitel has revised its management and personnel procedures over the past seven years to meet the challenges of the telecommunications systems and semiconductor markets. During that time British Telecom sold its 51% stake in the company. Mitel Telecom, the company's European plant, is located in South Wales at the Portskewett site. Mitel strove to break new, progressive ground in its policies, resulting in a work week of 37.5 hours, a flatter hierarchical structure, and flexible teams with cross-trained workers. Challenges continue to arise out of these changes.

Social Movements, the Occupational Arena and Changes in Career Consciousness: The Case of Women Flight Attendants

Article Abstract:

Social movements, such as the Civil Rights Movement, have prompted women to challenge the legality of airline rules that prevent flight attendants from working past the age of thirty-two. Women's movements like these have changed society's ideas about a woman's occupation and its impact on her family. A field study was conducted, and forty-four flight attendants were interviewed in detail. The findings indicate that some flight attendants took the job expecting to find a husband; as time went by they thought of the job as a career.
