Article Abstract:

The Hilsborough Stadium disaster has had far reaching effects on stadium safety, but the recommendations of the Taylor Report only aply to Premier and First Division football grounds. There is still the possibility of a similar disaster to the fire at Bradford City Football Club occuring, at non-designated grounds and un-regulated stands. Older and more vulnerable stands should take measures to limit risk and react rapidly to an incident, and regular inspections should be undertaken. Detection should not rely solely on a fire alarm system, but should involve physical inspection.

Watchdog calls for fire service shake up

Article Abstract:

A report by the Audit Commission, the local authority watchdog, claims that the government should alter the way it funds fire brigades by introducing a statutory duty to promote fire safety. It also claims there is not enough emphasis on fire prevention, and the fire services that invest in fire safety promotion have seen a reduction in the casualty rate in their areas. The report also criticises the old fashioned methods for assessing fire risks used by brigades.
