Safety audits: a company under the microscope

Article Abstract:

Safety audits involve the monitoring of organisations to ascertain the acceptability of their health and safety arrangements including standards of occupational hygiene. They will show the arrangements either to be up to an acceptable standard or else will identify deficiencies and will either recommend continuance with the arrangements in place or recommend specific changes. Performance is rated against a theoretical standard and expressed on a scale. Audits are aimed at the management to inform how well the company's arrangements compare to a standard and, repeated over time, they indicate change.

Status assessments: closing the loop

Article Abstract:

Status assessments only look at whether a system can respond to a health and safety problem. When these assessments have been made the results are fed back to the management who then have to make the changes necessary to close loopholes. This stage will involve advice from health and safety specialists who can get to grips with the identified needs. These assessments are different from inspection check-lists or audits as they do not involve quantitative measurements or estimations but only look at response abilities.
