Say no to dermatitis

Article Abstract:

There are between 60,000 to 70,000 cases-per-year of occupational dermatitus in the UK resulting in lost production of around 1 billion pounds sterling and four million working days. It would cost around 2 pence-per-day to operate a skin care programme which would resolve this problem. Using dispensers to distribute the right amount of cleanser and cream is more cost effective than employing buckets of barrier creams and hand cleansers. The introduction of a training programme which is regularly updated would ensure that the entire workforce was encouraged to use the system.

Helping hands: occupational ill-health has experienced a renaissance in recent years. RSI and stress are commonly discussed in the national media, but the rather less fashionable problem of dermatitis is often overlooked

Article Abstract:

Occupational dermatitis is responsible for the loss of about 4 million working days each year, and uninsured costs such as loss of production, administration and statutory sick pay costs hundreds of millions of pounds each year. In Germany a survey showed that occupational skin disorders feature strongly in hairdressing, painting and printing industries. Contact dermatitis is a major problem and companies should establish a skin care programme to prevent occupational skin problems and provide education, training and health surveillance.
