Single-status working: the key to harmonious industrial relations?

Article Abstract:

A survey of employee benefits in 66 private and public sector organizations found that most reported as positive their experience harmonizing employee benefits between the two sectors. Vacation and sick time, sick pay, redundancy pay, pension arrangements and disciplinary procedures were the most frequently harmonized terms of employment. Pay rates, basic weekly hours, and benefits such as private health insurance were the least frequently harmonized. The most common reasons for harmonization included improving industrial relations and encouraging flexibility.

Survey reveals declining importance of collective industrial relations

Article Abstract:

The fourth Workplace Industrial Survey in England showed greater use of participatory management and other new management practices and more attention to individual employee relations. New management practices used included an increase in multi-skilling and teamwork, also problem-solving groups such as quality circles in two out of five workplaces. Men and women were still concentrated in different workplaces, but most workplaces had written equal opportunity policies designed to move toward equality of treatment.

Productivity and new working practices at Rover

Article Abstract:

University of Warwick researchers say the UK Rover Group's lean production and New Deal changes are not solely responsible for productivity gains. The company's 1992 New Deal program gave employees job security while introducing features such as total flexibility, continuous improvement, and quality action teams. Although the researchers say real change took place, job rotations and other changes were not implemented uniformly in an atmosphere of imprecise rules.
