Preference for veterans may impede women

Article Abstract:

Veteran's preference laws have an adverse affect on female recruitment efforts. Nonveterans will continue to face employment barriers as long as the federal government continues to favor veterans in federal recruitment and as long as military service remains primarily a male domain. The conflicts between veteran's preference and equal opportunity for women will increase as more employees lose their jobs to overseas workers and more women enter the workforce. In designing recruitment programs to attract women, organizations should take steps that include soliciting support from top management; developing outreach procedures that ensures the emphasis of programs are placed on women; and training counselors in research techniques to ensure proper evaluation of program results.

Religion in the workplace: dealing in good faith?

Article Abstract:

Federal and state statutes and court rulings concerning religion in the workplace add to the importance of employers making efforts to allow for workers' religious-based requests. Areas of concern can include: time off for religious observances, clothing and grooming requirements, and an increasing trend toward 'Christian' companies. It is suggested that despite the potential for controversy, companies should consider having written policies about religious discrimination and accommodation. Such a policy should be provided to all workers, and both requests and complaints should be managed on a case-by-case basis. Flexibility in meeting employee religious needs is strongly recommended.
