Strikes: the long view from below

Article Abstract:

This article discusses labor relations in the age of capitalism, focusing on the use of strikes by workers when they find work conditions to be inappropriate to their needs; the author discusses the history of strikes in the US and the laws that limited and restricted the rights of workers to strike, such as the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) which allowed only unions to strike, and the Taft-Hartley Act which allowed workers to strike only against their immediate employer. The decline of job security, a reduction in workers' real wages and an increase in work hours since the 1980s has lead to the deterioration of labor rights and work conditions in the US, yet there has been a decline in workers' strikes over the same period, which the author attributes to international economic stagnation and suppression of strikes and union breaking during this period.

The merit pay controversy

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the issue of merit pay among public school teachers; under this system, teachers would be paid based on students' performances on standardized tests. Opponents to this plan believe it would only reward teachers in better schools because their students are more prepared for such test; some opponents also see this as a means of dividing teachers and weakening teachers' unions.
